Governor Profiles


The Governing Body of Swindon College is a team of individuals with a broad base of skills and experience. The team meet regularly to review the college’s mission, to consider strategic developments, to systematically monitor college and management performance, to review and monitor the implementation of a range of college policies, and ensure compliance with statutory requirements at all times. Steve Wain


Steve joined Swindon College as its Principal in August 2016. He previously led Shrewsbury College for four years, through a successful period of renewal and change culminating in the creation of the 'Shrewsbury Colleges Group'. This heralded a new start for FE in Shropshire by bringing together Shrewsbury’s two pre-existing colleges. Steve has worked in FE for over twenty years and has extensive senior management experience covering FE and Sixth Form Colleges.
 

Rob Beale (Chair)


Rob was re-appointed as the Chair of Governors in early 2015. He had served previously as Chair in the period leading up to the college’s inspection by Ofsted in 2013 when the college was graded ‘Outstanding’.

Rob has been a partner with Morris Owen, Chartered Accountants, based in Old Town, since 1998 and has specialisms in the construction industry and in financial services. He has a substantial knowledge of Swindon, its key employers, and its skills needs.

Rob chairs the Remuneration Committee and sits on the Quality and Standards and Resources Committees.

 

Ian Larrard


Ian joined the Board in December 2011. He is currently Director of the Swindon and Wiltshire Initiative, part of Business West. Ian is also a Board Member of Influence Swindon, which acts as the collective voice of business in Swindon, Enterprise Wiltshire Ltd and inSwindon BID Company. A banker by profession, he held senior posts with HSBC in Swindon and district for many years. A previous international athlete, he is Chairman of Swindon Harriers.

 

Peter Wells (Vice Chair)


Peter joined the Board in January 2011. He was previously the Executive Head Teacher of St. Joseph’s Catholic College in Swindon. He played a key part in the design, development and delivery of the new college which opened in 2006. A head teacher for 19 years he has been in senior school management for more than thirty years. He has been for many years involved in work with disabled children and has supported the development of a rural secondary school in western Uganda. His academic background is in history and management. He is the chair of the Quality and Standards Committee and a member of the Search and Governance Committee.

 

Sarah Garrett


Sarah was elected to the Board in October 2013. She is a senior manager with Nationwide in Swindon. Sarah has much experience of governance having been chair of trustees at the Prospect Hospice. She is the Chair of the Audit Committee.

 

Teresa Johnson (Staff Governor)


 

Mutsai Hove Bird


Mutsai joined the Board in July 2015. She is a qualified psychiatric nurse and has extensive experience of the NHS at nurse manager level and, more recently, was the Chief Executive of the Swindon Carers’ Centre. As well as continuing to undertake nursing duties, Mutsai, a resident of Old Town, is a management consultant to the charity sector. Mutsai will sit on the Quality and Standards Committee.

 

Marc Bayley


Marc joined the Governing Body in September 2015. He is Director of the Swindon office of EW Beard Ltd., the well-known regional construction company. An active member in the local community, Marc was a Governor for 10 years at Hilperton Primary School and John of Gaunt Secondary School in Trowbridge. He is currently a Trustee for the Wiltshire School of Gymnastics and also a member of a number of business forums that look at the integration of businesses with the local community with regard to Swindon’s infrastructure, education and cultural needs. Marc will sit on the Governing Body’s Resources Committee.

 

Julie McLeod


Dr Julie McLeod joined the Governing Body in May 2015. She is Pro Vice-Chancellor (student Experience) at Oxford Brookes University. Julie has a PhD in Pharmacology and held a number of senior academic positions at the University of the West of England before moving to her present employer. Julie will sit on the Quality and Standards Committee.

 

Fiona Miller


Fiona joined the Board in September 2016 and is a member of the Quality and Standards Committee. She has worked with BT for over 25 years, with a career including project management, consumer affairs and inclusion strategy. She currently works on BT’s tech literacy programme, changing perceptions around technology so that young people understand the role it will play in their futures. She joins Swindon’s Skills and Employment board in 2017.


Kathy Newman

Kathy joined the Board in June 2017 and is a member of the Audit Committee.  A qualified Chartered Accountant, Kathy has held a variety of finance and audit related roles across her career.  Her current position is Deputy Chief Internal Auditor at Nationwide Building Society in Swindon.
