Level 2 Apprenticeship in Carpentry & Joinery

This course is suitable for people employed in the Carpentry/Joinery industry. The course includes practical skills, theory, assignments and project work. Your work-based experience will play a major part in the successful completion of the Apprenticeship.

Areas covered include mandatory units:
• Conform to general workplace safety
• Move and handle resources
• Conform to efficient work practices.

Bench Joinery Unit options: (two units from the following)
• Set up and use circular saws
• Produce setting out details for routine products
• Mark out from setting out details for routine products
• Manufacture routine products.

Site Carpentry options: (two units from the following)
• Install first fix components
• Install second fix components
• Erect structural carcassing components
• Maintain non-structural carpentry work
• Set up and use circular saws.

Entry Requirements

The Apprenticeship is open to those aged 16+ in suitable employment who hold GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade D or above in English and Maths.

You will also need to have the interest, enthusiasm and willingness to work hard.

For exams taken 2017 onwards you will need GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade 3 or above in English and Maths.

Assessment/Exam information

All assessment is continuous and in accordance with NVQs, your ability to do the job will be confirmed by:
• Observation of your work
• Material you collect
• Accreditation of prior learning
• Questions asked of you regarding your particular work situation

This course is based at North Star. During the course you will receive expert tuition from highly trained staff: A qualified Assessor will be allocated to the learner who will provide an induction and plan with him/her assessments in their work place. A Training Co-ordinator will support you throughout your training, through regular work based review meetings.

What can I do next?

On completion of this course you can apply to progress to the Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3) in Carpentry or Joinery.

On successful completion of the course students will be awarded an Apprenticeship covering:

• NVQ Diploma in Wood Occupations (Level 2)
• Level 2 Diploma in Site Carpentry Bench Joinery
• Functional Skills in English
(Level 1)
• Functional Skills in Maths (Level 1)
• Employment Rights & Responsibilities (ERR)
• Personal Learning & Thinking Skills (PLTS).
