Level 3 Apprenticeship in Carpentry & Joinery

This course is suitable for people employed in the Carpentry/Joinery industry and includes practical skills, theory, assignments and project work.

Your work-based experience will play a major part in the successful completion of the Apprenticeship. Areas covered include the following mandatory units:
• Conforming work activities and resources for an occupational work area in the workplace
• Developing and maintaining good occupational working relationships in the workplace
• Conforming the occupational method of work in the workplace

Bench Joinery Options:
• Setting up and using fixed or transportable woodworking machinery in the workplace
• Manufacturing complex shaped bespoke bench joinery products in the workplace
• Producing setting out details for routine bench joinery products in the workplace (if not completed at Level 2)
• Marking out from setting out details for routine bench joinery products in the workplace (if not completed at Level 2)

Site Carpentry Options:
• Erecting complex structural carcassing components in the workplace
• Installing first fixing components in the workplace (if not completed at Level 2)
• Installing first fixing components in the workplace (if not completed at Level 2)
• Erecting structural carcassing components in the workplace (if not completed at Level 2)

Entry Requirements

The Apprenticeship is open to those aged 16+ in suitable employment who hold GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade D or above in English and Maths.

You will also need to have the interest, enthusiasm and willingness to work hard.

For exams taken 2017 onwards you will need GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade 4 or above in English and Maths.

Assessment/Exam information

All assessment is continuous and in accordance with NVQs, your ability to do the job will be confirmed by:
• Observation of your work
• Material you collect
• Accreditation of prior learning
• Questions asked of you regarding your particular work situation

This course is based at North Star. During the course you will receive expert tuition from highly trained staff: A qualified Assessor will be allocated to the learner who will provide an induction and plan with him/her assessments in their work place. A Training Co-ordinator will support you throughout your training, through regular work based review meetings.

What can I do next?

On completion of this course students can progress to Site Management and various other industry related qualifications.

On successful completion of the course students will be awarded an Apprenticeship covering:
• NVQ Diploma in Wood Occupations (QCF)
• Level 3 Diploma in Site Carpentry or Bench Joinery (QCF)
• Functional Skills in English
(Level 2)
• Functional Skills in Maths (Level 2 )
• Employment Rights & Responsibilities (ERR)
• Personal Learning & Thinking Skills (PLTS)
