Level 2 Apprenticeship in Plumbing

This course is suitable for people employed in the Plumbing industry.
The course includes practical work in basic skills and systems, theory, assignments and project work. Your work based experience will also contribute to the construction of your portfolio.

The type of plumbing work carried out by your employer will determine which pathway is to be taken - Domestic Heating or Plumbing and Heating:

NVQ Diploma in Installing and maintaining Domestic Heating Systems (Level 2):
Credits need to be completed from the following units:
• Understand and carry out safe working practices in building services engineering
• Understand and carry out site preparation and pipework fabrication techniques for domestic plumbing and heating services
• Understand and apply domestic cold water system installation and maintenance techniques
• Understand and apply domestic hot water system installation and maintenance techniques
• Understand and apply domestic central heating system installation and maintenance techniques
• Understand how to communicate with others within building services engineering
• Understand how to apply environmental protection measures within building services engineering
• Understand how to apply scientific principles within building services engineering
• Apply safe working practices in building services engineering working environment
• Install and maintain domestic plumbing and heating systems

NVQ Diploma in Plumbing and Heating (Level 2):
In addition to the above units the following two units are also required:
• Understand and apply domestic rainwater system installation and maintenance techniques
• Understand and apply domestic above ground drainage system installation and maintenance techniques

Entry Requirements

The Apprenticeship is open to those aged
16+ in suitable employment who hold
GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade D or above in English and Maths.

For exams taken 2017 onwards you will need GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade 3 or above in English and Maths.

Generally you will need to have good skills in:
• Personal management
• Time management
• Communication

You will also need to have the interest, enthusiasm and willingness to work hard.

Assessment/Exam information

This is continual and in accordance with NVQs. Your ability to do the job will be confirmed by:
• Observation of your work
• Material you collect
• Accreditation of prior learning
• Questions asked of you regarding your particular work situation

Other information

On the successful completion of the course students will be awarded an Apprenticeship covering:
• NVQ Diploma in Installing and Maintaining Domestic Heating (Level 2) OR NVQ Diploma in Plumbing and Heating (Level 2)
• Functional Skills in English (Level 2)
• Functional Skills in Maths (Level 2)
• Functional Skills in ICT (Level 1)
• Employment Rights & Responsibilities (ERR)
• Personal Learning & Thinking Skills (PLTS)

This course is based at North Star. During the course you will receive expert tuition from highly trained staff.
A qualified Assessor will be allocated to the learner who will provide an induction and plan with him/her assessments in their work place.
A Training Co-ordinator will support you throughout your training, through regular work based review meetings.

What can I do next?

On successful completion of the course a student may consider progression onto the Advanced Apprenticeship in Plumbing Level 3 dependent on suitable employment and assessor approval.
