HND Photography

The programme is an industry focused course which provides students with the techniques and knowledge to follow a career in the photographic sector.
It is specifically designed for those looking to develop their photography skills and to further their areas of personal interest.

Entry Requirements

You need to have at least one of the following Level 3 qualifications:
AVCE or an Access to HE course. (Qualifications need to total a minimum of 120 credits).

Students from an art & design course are required to present a portfolio of work at interview.

Mature students without formal qualifications, but with relevant industrial experience and a portfolio of
work will be considered.

What do I need to bring?

Pen, Pencil, Notepad & A4 File. Other specialist materials may be neede as you progress through the course. These will be discussed at interview.

Assessment/Exam information

Assessment methods involve formative and summative strategies leading to a positive learning methodology with written feedback on all assessed work. Students are continuously assessed and there is regular feedback on the development of photographic style and production techniques. Structured tutorial sessions are also timetabled.

Other information

Project themes are based around interrelated modules emphasing approaches to Studio and landscape Photography developing both traditional and contemporary approaches in
the following areas:

* Traditional black and white photography using an SLR camera
* Digital photography
* Location/Advertising photographic techniques
* Computer software
* Professional and studio practice.

Throughout the course, visits to galleries and exhibitions are encouraged and organised. Guest
lecturers from the industry regularly visit and there are opportunities for overseas exchanges and educational trips.

Entry into relevant, national competitions is encouraged and all students exhibit in a final major show, which is assessed. Studying an HND in Photography at Swindon College Higher National Diplomas are nationally recognised vocationally
based qualifications and offer a `fast track- two-year route into the media and design industries.

The majority of studio projects undertaken at the College are directly linked to the real requirements of industry and commerce, so students leave the course with a realistic understanding of the client/photographer relationship.

Graduates of this course are well equipped to take advantage of the
career opportunities offered by photography in many different fields of employment. Some students choose to
continue their studies by applying to
join the second year of a BA (Hons)
Photography degree at another
institution.

Qualification description

On successful completion of the course, students are awarded an Edexcel Higher National Diploma in Photography.

All HE students will be charged a trips and exhibition fee of £90 per year of their programme. Other costs may be incurred in the production of project work.
