Level 3 Apprenticeship in Hairdressing

The Advanced Apprenticeship is suitable for hairdressers who wish to enhance their styling and technical skills, advance their qualifications and who wish to take on more Salon Management responsibility. The course covers the following areas:

• Ensure own actions reduce risks to Health & Safety
• Promote additional products or services to clients
• Provide hairdressing consultation services
• Create a variety of looks by using a combination of cutting techniques
• Develop and enhance your creative hairdressing skills
• Style and dress long hair
• Provide colour correction services
• Colour hair using a variety of techniques.

Entry Requirements

The Apprenticeship is open to those aged
16+ in suitable employment who hold
GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade C or above in English and maths.

For exams taken 2017 onwards you will need GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade 4 or above in English and Maths.

Fees information

Students will need to provide a textbook, tools and equipment for practical work. A list of suggested equipment is available. Students have the opportunity to attend outside activities such as demonstrations, competitions and exhibitions. Trip costs will all need to be met by the student or their employer.

Assessment/Exam information

The Hairdressing and Beauty Industry
Authority (HABIA) set the standards of hairdressing NVQ’s.

Assessment is continuous throughout the course and is carried out in the workplace and at college.

Evidence for your qualification is gained through observation of work, assignments, photographic evidence and written exams.

This course is based at North Star where you will receive expert tuition from well qualified and experienced staff.
A Training Co-ordinator will support you throughout your training, through regular work based review meetings.

What can I do next?

Progression to the Advanced
Apprenticeship is subject to trade test.

This course provides a good basis for careers in:
• Technician work for manufacturing company
• Media Work
• Salon management
• Teaching certificate for a career as a College Lecturer or Trainer

Qualification description

On the successful completion of course the student will be awarded an Advanced
Apprenticeship covering:
• NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing (QCF) Level 3
• Functional Skills in English (Level 2)
• Functional Skills in Maths (Level 2)
• Employment Rights & Responsibilities (ERR)
• Personal Learning & Thinking Skills (PLTS)

Other optional qualification opportunities are:
• Manufacturer’s Product Updating Diplomas
• Competition Participation Diplomas.
