Your courses:

BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies

To enrol for this full-time, top-up Level 6 BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies qualification, students must have successfully completed the Foundation Degree in Early Years, or an equivalent Level 5 sector-endorsed qualification, with an average grade of 55% or more.

The course material helps learners develop a broad understanding of Early Years Care and Education in a variety of contexts and prepares them for management and leadership roles. A research project, which forms part of the course, helps students develop their research project and management skills. On admission, learners are asked to identify and agree a suitable work-based learning environment with their tutor, where they will perform the work-based research project.

On completion of the Honours year students can progress to an initial Teacher Training Programme, to gain Early Years Teacher status. Students may take other pathways requiring further study such as Educational Psychologist, or go into other roles such as Play Therapist, Supervisory and Managerial roles within Early Years settings, and other roles in an advisory or consultancy capacity.

Entry Requirements

Students will have successfully completed the Foundation Degree in Early Years or equivalent Level 5 sector-endorsed qualification, with a minimum average grade profile of at least 55%. In all cases, consideration will be given to the applicant’s potential to progress to Honours level. Students must identify and agree a suitable work-based learning environment with the tutor in which they can carry out the work-based research project. This must be in place at the time of admission.

Applicants must hold a satisfactory Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS).

Early Years Teacher Status (EYT) for students working with Foundation Stage children aged 0-5. The BA (Hons) Early Years does not in itself deliver the EYT Status. However, a progression for EYPS validation is organised with a separate provider, and students who have achieved the degree will be eligible to enlist on one of the shorter validation pathways. Students interested in the EYTS should note that they will need GCSE English, maths and science at grades A-C.

PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate in Education) for students wishing to continue to teacher training, please note that GCSE (or equivalent) English, maths and science at grades A-C are required.
