Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)

The course informs and consolidates professional practice in teaching young and mature adults. A variety of assessment methods are used and students will be expected to keep a reflective diary, take part in action and practitioner research, write essays, give presentations based on research findings and be observed when teaching. Modules include:

Entry Requirements

Admission is for teachers/lecturers/trainers already working in the post-compulsory sector. Entry into year two will be considered for applicants who have Diploma in Education and Teaching (DET) Year 1 or equivalent (Contact the Programme Leader at Swindon College, via , who can assess your qualifications to see if they are equivalent).
GCSE English and maths is required. Students who do not have this qualification will be required to achieve GCSE English Language grade C+ or equivalent before the course commences. Students must have 50 hours teaching during the academic year/s in which they undertake the course at a range of levels and to have access to a subject specialist mentor. Applicants are required to have minimum Level 3 qualification, which may be a vocational qualification, in their subject.
Students will be required to be DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) checked.
Applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate a score of 6.5 at IELTS in all four elements.

Course fees are payable each year and are £3080 per year

Assessment/Exam information

100% portfolio based using a variety of assessment methods. You will be expected to keep a reflective diary, take part in action and practitioner research, write essays, give presentations based on research findings and be observed when teaching.

All submitted work will be marked and returned with feedback within four weeks.

In preparation for the interview you will need to attend with:

Three forms of original identification, including one photographic form PLUS 3 photocopies or scans.

If you have changed your name please ensure you attend with any appropriate certificates (e.g. deed polll or marriage/divorce certificate). For all entry requirements listed you must bring the Original certificates plus photocopies or scans.

Two passport size photographs with your name on the back.

Two references (these can be open references) stating your suitability for joining the PGCE, to include one from your current employer.

What can I do next?

On gaining the PGCE, individuals are qualified to teach across the Education and Skills Sector which includes: further education, higher education, the health service, adult and community education, prison education, the armed forces or private training providers. On successful completion of the full qualification, candidates may want to apply for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status which holds a parity of esteem with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
