Swindon Management School: ABE L5 Business Management and Human Resources (HR) Diploma

This course will equip you for a middle management role, perhaps leading a small to medium sized team in any organisation. The course comprises six management units and two HR specialist units:

• Managing Agile Organisations and People (Semester 1, Wednesday evening)
• Innovation and Business Performance (Semester 1, Thursday evening)
• Business Strategy and Decision Making (Semester 1, Wednesday day)
• International Business Economics and Markets (Semester 2, Thursday evening)
• Leading Strategic Change (Semester 2, Wednesday day)
• Effective Financial Management (Semester 2, Wednesday evening)
• Employee Engagement (HR) (Semester 1, Wednesday day)
• Human Resource Management (HR) (Semester 2, Wednesday day)

This course can be accessed as either a 1 year Full time course or a 2 year Part time course. Full time students attend college on Wednesday (all day and evening) and Thursday (evening only). Part time students can attend in the day on Wednesday, or, alternatively on two evenings Wednesday and Thursday.

Entry Requirements

If you are aged 19 and under we would expect you to have at least 48 UCAS points (usually A Levels, BTEC or similar Level 3) and have GCSE level 4/C in English and Maths.

One massive advantage of this course is that no formal qualifications are specified for adults aged 20 +. We have to ensure you have a reasonable expectation of success on the programme by assessing your previous qualifications and/or related work experience.

Entry is automatic for any student holding a L4 ABE qualification or other relevant L4 qualification.


What do I need to bring?

Your own device (i.e. tablet / laptop) will be required, you will also have access to College network computers.

Assessment/Exam information

The course is assessed by a combination of examinations (at set times) and Assignments. This means you may have a gap between studying a unit and then sitting the exam. Revision sessions will be arranged to help you with that. See below, which units are examined and which are assignment based. To pass the course you must complete at least six units at L5 achieving a pass in at least 5 of them. You must pass all 4 of the compulsory (C) units:

What can I do next?

After completing your L5 Qualification you can progress onto the L6 Diploma in either; Management, HR, or Marketing. The L6 course is delivered completely in the winter semester each year. This means PT students would complete this course over 3 semesters (18 months total) with teaching only in semesters 1 and 3 . The attendance is the same as L5 i.e one full day and one evening FT or two evenings PT. If you choose to commit to the L6 when you start your L4 or L5 course we will pay your L6 tuition fee for you. All you need to do is pay registration and exam fees.

Most people believe you have to study for three years at University to achieve a degree. That isn’t the case. ABE have agreements with a number of Universities, including University of the West of England, where you can use your ABE qualification to enter a degree course in the second year, or , in the case of The University of Gloucestershire, go directly to a post- graduate MBA, with your L6 ABE qualification, skipping the need for a first degree altogether. Not only does this keep your options open but it may also save you a small fortune in tuition fees and living expenses.

Qualification description

Develops a strategic understanding of business management and a deeper knowledge of HR principles and practice. You will study 6 units at L5 and 2 units at L6. This will help to prepare you for the L6 follow on semester, which could be your passport to an MBA.
