Level 3 - Hospitality Apprenticeship

Ryan Muskett

Ryan, 20, studied a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Hospitality after deciding he wanted to change his career path. Ryan says:

Before my apprenticeship, I studied BTEC Level 3 Public Services and started work with Wiltshire Police in their HR department. I didn’t feel like it was for me and after working part-time in a local pub when I was younger, my manager suggested I undertake the apprenticeship with him.
I knew a lot about how pubs were run, as my dad is the landlord of a local pub, but I had only really completed general tasks because I was underage and as he doesn’t serve food, I hadn’t been able to experience that side of the business.

Ryan decided to undertake the Level 3 Hospitality Apprenticeship after his manager suggested the course to him and was really surprised that even though it was so in depth, it only took 9 months. He explains:

I was really pleased to find out that I would be learning about such a wide range of subjects within hospitality. I have had the opportunity to run the bar, wait tables, provide front of house service, interact with customers and handle complaints; this has given me a really good idea of a management role within this type of environment. I am constantly learning new skills that will help me as I progress. I love working in a pub that incorporates traditional bar work and restaurant service.

Ryan plans to go on to study the Level 3 Hospitality Apprenticeship with guidance from his Manager, so he can keep building on his management skills and step-up in to that role when the opportunity arises.

Ian has been great in guiding me through my apprenticeship. He’s encouraged me through everything and taught me so many new things I didn’t think would be relevant to hospitality. I definitely see myself within a managerial role within the next 5 years after I complete the Level 3 qualification. My apprenticeship has helped me understand how the Hospitality industry is run and made clear what is involved to run a successful establishment.
