Level 2 - Health and Social Care

Grace York

Grace, 19, first started her studies at Swindon College on a Level 2 Health and Social Care course where she has progressed onto the Level 3 programme as well as re-taking her GCSE’s and successfully passing the Functional Skills programme.

Her hard work and achievements have not gone unrecognised by her tutors and she was chosen to receive the Best Overall Health and Social Care award at this year’s Further Education awards.

Health and Social Care lecturer Teresa Johnson said:

Grace was a little quiet when she started Level 3, it was a large group, and she kept her head down and always sought out extra work and demonstrated excellent research skills.

She showed her commitment to the course by skyping course work whilst on holiday in Canada.

When Grace became pregnant it was clear that this would not be a barrier to achieving the course. Grace took time to be with her daughter, and kept in contact with her friends and with us through emails and Moodle.

When Grace was ready to return back to college, the commitment shown before, had solidified into a steely determination to succeed. A real example of how self-determination and appropriate support can negotiate and overcome barriers.

I really enjoyed the course, I didn’t want it to end I would do it all over again if I had the chance. The tutors have totally supported me throughout the levels and when I had a short break to have my daughter.

Grace plans to go to university next year where she would like to study Nursing.
