Media Make-up Students put on a Spectacular End of Year Show!

Swindon College Media Make-up Students worked for 11 hours applying make-up and costumes ready for a spectacular end of year show at STEAM this year.

Media make-up course tutor, Ellie Baskerville said: “Everything was made by the students, they got there at 8am and the show started at 7pm.  It was a really amazing showcase of their skills.”

First year students chose birds as their theme for a display of make-up and fashion, those in the 2nd year of the course styled retro games, and the HND year one students based their designs on a rainforest theme. Graduating students were given free rein to demonstrate their imagination and dexterity with any idea that took their fancy.  “They all worked incredibly hard” said Ellie, “they were amazing”.

The students made all the costumes and wigs for the performance, as well as designing and applying intricate make-up, including bodypainting. The artists and their models walked down the catwalk to show off their work to an audience of around 500 people.

In September 2018 a degree level course will be added to the qualifications offered by Swindon College in this subject area to give them the chance to hone their skills even further.  Former students have gone on to work for top make-up firms, some have set up their own beauty and wedding make-up businesses, and others have found careers in the theatre or film and television. Productions including Wicked and The Lion King have benefitted from their make-up skills.

Their wig making skills have also been in demand.  Some famous figures in the world-famous Madame Tussauds are wearing hair pieces created by Swindon College alumni and they have even given dressage horses a full mane.

We’d like to wish a huge congratulations to all of the students for their incredible work, and wish them the best of luck for their futures, whether they’re continuing at Swindon College next year, or moving onto their next challenge!
