Starting with a high, celebrating National Apprenticeship Week

A full week of activities were planned by the Apprenticeship Team at Swindon College to celebrate National Apprenticeship week from the 5-9thMarch 2018.

On Monday the launch day, the Vice Principal, David Francis, Development and Progression, trialled being an Apprentice for the day in our Carpentry and Joinery workshop.  Kitted up in PPE of working boots and Hi-Viz jacket, he watched a demonstration with instructions on fitting a door hinge and was left with his wood and chisel to ‘carve out the groove’

William Millar who is currently an Apprentice on the Site Carpentry Level 2 programme offered David plenty of advice and help.  William is currently enjoying his course which is mainly hands-on with some academic lessons and his ambition is to be a valuable member of his dads’ company Ram Period Property Ltd. and maybe take over the helm sometime in the future!

David Francis commented: “I found it extraordinary how the tutor could explain and demonstrate in such a simple way that made it totally digestible for the students, for quite a complex task.”

The tutor James Crockett who was in charge of the lesson was really impressed that the Vice Principal had stepped up and taken on the challenge of working as an apprentice for the day, and he praised him for a brave effort for a first attempt!

Nikola Hewington, the Apprenticeship Team Leader said “With the news reports this week that Apprenticeship numbers are falling nationally, Swindon College has been instrumental in maintained their numbers in all areas and in some cases numbers have increased, so our intake is looking very good for the 2018/2019 academic year”.

Other activities include, visits from schools, an Open Evening on Thursday 8th from 4-7pm and a fun social media competition running during the week.

Anyone who is interested in joining one of the many Apprenticeship programmes at Swindon College can also come along to our Open Event on 19th April from 5-7pm to find out more or visit or contact our Apprenticeship Team on (01793) 498208.
