Building a future for themselves...

On Friday 18thMay, the Guild of Bricklayers held their Region Heat, for the Western Section, at Swindon College, Construction Centre at their North Star Campus. 

The competition consisted of a bricklaying task for each level, a Junior and Senior category which students from Bridgewater and Taunton College, City of Bristol College, Wiltshire College, Cornwall College, Petroc College and Swindon College took place in.

The competition started at 9am and went through to 2.30pm for Juniors and 3.30pm for Seniors. At the end of these times the 2 judges from Bridgend College in Wales, had the difficult task of judging each person’s work and picking the winners.  

One of the judges from Bridgend College, Phil Van-Roberts, said “The quality of work produced at this event today was one of the highest quality I have seen for a while.”

After much deliberation the results were as follows:

Junior Category  - 1stPlace Ross Nelson, City of Bristol College

                           2ndPlace Shaynee April Rose Davis, Wiltshire College

                            3rdPlace Jordan Knuckley, Cornwall College

Senior Category – 1stPlace Viktor Sukharyev, Swindon College, Employer

                            2ndPlace Thomas Wills, Cornwall College

                            3rdPlace Luke Newland, City of Bristol College.


The President of the Guild of Bricklayers, Kevin Harold said “The quality of work was extremely high today and the surprise of the day was Wiltshire College’s student Shaynee April Rose David, who did not complete the task but still managed to be awarded 2ndplace in the Junior category because her standard of work was so high.”

This statement was reiterated by the competition organiser,Steve Southern, Lecturer.

The students were presented with tools and equipment from local sponsors Kellaway, Tilgear, and OX.  Also a big thank you to Wienerberger and CPI Euromix who generously donated the building materials for the whole event.

The winners of each category will now go forward to the National Final being held on Wednesday 27th June at Brooklands College Weybridge Surrey. 


Well done to everyone who took part and helped make the day such a success.
